The BB fun day on 17of September

I must count myself privileged to join in the BB Johor State games day with 1^st and 2^nd Kluang Company on the 17^th of September. We as 1^st Johor Bahru Company traveled to Kluang to exchange with our brothers and sisters in those 2 companies who welcomed us with an open heart.

On 17^th of September, every member eagerly gathers at SMKTTA’s bus stop and 1^st Johor Bahru Company Resource Center at about 7.30 in the morning and departed to Kluang reaching the SJKC Chung Ling at about 9.40 in the morning. We were greeted by 1^st and 2^nd Kluang and had some ice breaking games with them. While the members were enjoying, officers were chit-chatting each other. After that, those members who were lost had to be punished.

About 12 noon, the food had been prepared. So, members had their lunch and fellowship with each other. After lunch, we got into bus and departed to Gunung Lambak.

About 1’o clock, we reached the entrance of Gunung Lambak. Every member was desperate to challenge the mountain. So, we started the expedition after the officers gave the instruction. The invigorating fresh air in the mountain accompany with fresh, windy breeze were refreshing, making it a heaven that we reluctant to leave. The beauty of the mountain’s scenery was described as such a picturesque. Unfortunately, the weather seems to go down and started to rain. While we were halfway through climbing Gunung Lambak, the rain became heavier and we stop our progress and rest in a pavilion. It seems that the rain would not want to stop so we had to continue our journey when it became smaller after about an hour.

Our path to the peak had become very slippery because of the rain and every member had to be careful so that they would not fell down. After another half hour struggling on the muddy path, we finally reached our destination.

Our hard work all along the journey had rally paid off when we saw the scenery of whole Kluang. Just a pity that the misty situation up there really made our sight blur. So, most of the members were tired and rest there. Meanwhile, some of the members and officers were taking some photo.

We departed from the peak of the hill about 4 o’clock in the afternoon. Although at the time the road were still slippery but the cooling breeze made the trip somehow wonderful. At about six we were at the resort, enjoying our free time while waiting for dinner to come. And at last, there were a really wonderful and delicious dinner as conclude of the fantastic trip we went that day.

We were back to our school and Resource Center at about 10 o’clock and here’s call the day.

Why do we need to have goals?

In absence of clearly defined goals, we become strangely loyal to performing daily acts of trivia.The path to our destination is not always a straight one. We go down the wrong road, we get lost, we turn back. Maybe it doesn't matter which road we embark on. Maybe what matters is that we embark.The reason most people never reach their goals is that they don't define them, or ever seriously consider them as believable or achievable. Winners can tell you where they are going, what they plan to do along the way, and who will be sharing the adventure with them.Never discourage anyone...who continually makes progress, no matter how slow.

The value of an ambitious goal is not measured by what it will bring to you. The worth of a goal is measured by what it will make of you in the process of following and attaining it.
An outrageous and impractical goal can be just as valuable as a prudent and pragmatic one. What matters is not how realistic or practical your objective may be, but how much it compels you to push beyond your limitations.
There are stunningly brilliant possibilities for your life that you've never even imagined. Set yourself on a meaningful and ambitious course, and the best of those possibilities will begin snapping into focus.
It pays to dream big dreams. And it certainly pays to follow the biggest and most ambitious of them. For the biggest dreams will put you face to face with the biggest challenges. And those challenges, difficult as they may be, will nourish you in ways that nothing else can.

1st JB’s 55th Anniversary and Pre-pesta “Being as One” Tour

I must count myself privileged to join in the June holidays tour from 8 to 11 June 2011 for 4 days and 3 nights of fun, fellowship and new experiences. We traveled to Kuala Lumpur and Melaka to exchange with our brothers and sisters in BB Companies who welcomed us with open hands and hearts. This tour is to promote being as ONE BB in Malaysia and to prepare for perhaps the first ever combined BB Malaysia band for the Grand Banquet in next year’s PESTA 2012, which will be held in Johor Bahru.

On 8^th of June, every member eagerly gathered at 1^st JB’s Resource Center about 7.30 in the morning and departed directly to KL reaching the YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association) in KL at noon. We were greeted by 3^rd KL and together dined as the nearby restaurant for lunch.

After a good lunch, we were divided into few groups with 3^rd KL NCO’s leading us to Times Square for getting to know each other and soaking in the sights of KL.

In the next day, after breakfast at YMCA’s SHIOK café we had our devotion time with 1^st KL and 3^rd KL members about 9 o’clock. About 10 o’clock, band members readied for a workshop that led by Mr. Soon, Mr. Andrew from 1^st JB Company assisted by instructors from other KL BB Companies. Meanwhile, non-band members continued their fellowship with KL members enjoying their shopping at Mid-Valley Megamall.

It was certainly exciting to hear the 100 strong combined band playing the grand piece “Colonial Collage” in preparation for PESTA 2012. We also enjoyed our attempt at the feet tapping Black Eye Peas’ song “I Gotta Feeling” and it was awesome to hear us play as one.

About 6 o’clock, non-band members came back from Mid-Valley and all were transported to Petaling Street for dinner. All members were divided into few groups and can go anywhere with their group members. A lot of delicious food were offered there and we enjoyed it very much. Thanks 3^rd KL and Mr Tony Chow for leading us so well!

A night visit to the lighted KLCC was a true highlight and picture perfect occasion. Almost every member took out their camera and tried to capture the whole beautifully lighted KLCC in a picture, even lying down on the ground.

Back at the YMCA we had our final gathering with KL members and officers. Our captain, Mr. Jason gave three “fresh from the factory” 1^st JB red dry-fit T-shirts to Mr Tony Chow, which is the Honorary Captain of 3^rd KL Company, Mr Aaron Tan, the current captain of 3^rd KL Company and Mr Jasper Low, the band officer in charge of 3^rd KL as a gift to thanks them for organizing all the needful our tour in KL. Without them we would not have been able to stay so comfortably at YMCA and we truly enjoyed their warm welcome, leadership and fellowhip.

On Friday morning, we had a short but meaningful devotion in a room that led by Mr. Jason before leaving for historical Melaka at 10.30am. Capt Jason spoke about how God our Father always wants to give us the best things in life.

After 3 hours, we reached Methodist Church in Melaka greeted by members from BB Melaka who kindly prepare our accommodation and all amenities needed for our stay. At 2 o’clock, we had a combine band workshop with Melaka BB Companies those non-band members enjoyed games with Melaka Company members. Although it was short, the fellowship was nice and memorable for every member.

For dinner, we were treated to Melaka famous Satay Celup. It was a new experience for every one of us and it was delicious. After that, we divided into a few groups and went to Jonker Street night market with Melaka Company members. Although there was many people, we still enjoyed because a lot of us managed to taste the yummy Nyonya Cendol in Melaka. About 10 o’clock, we headed back to church for the night.

On Saturday morning, we have our breakfast with Melaka Company’s members and Officers together. Then, we hiked up St. Paul’s hill and of course visited the A-Famosa. Then, we went to the Independence Museum to understand more about Malaysia’s history. About 4 o’clock, we joined in parade and fellowship with Melaka Companies together in their church compound. They introduced us Tchoukball which is a kind of sport requiring no body contact with each other. About 5.30pm, we reluctantly left for Johor Bahru.

It was a blessed and memorable tour for every officer and member and we really learnt a lot throughout the whole tour. Our grateful thanks again to BB in Kuala Lumpur and Melaka for hosting us so well and for the wonderful fellowship which we will never forget. Really looking forward to seeing you all in the next PESTA in Johor Bahru!

The Importance of Being a Follower

Not everyone can get to the top. There's just not enough room up there. And that's really not a bad thing. We need people who are willing to follow those who lead; people who implement the leader's plans. And that may be where you (and I) come in.

Unfortunately, because there is a long-held viewpoint that being a follower means you are submissive and powerless, being in a support position somehow has become equated with a lack of importance, when, in fact, the opposite is true. People in support positions who are exceptionally good at their jobs can be just as powerful as people in leadership roles.

The Need for Followership

In reality, wherever there is leadership there is followership. The two co-exist in every walk of life. In fact, without followers there would be no leaders because there wouldn't be anyone to lead.

Being a good follower means you have developed some very important skills such as the ability to learn, to take direction and to benefit from the guidance of another. Being a good follower means you are motivated, reliable and a team player.

This does not automatically mean you follow someone blindly or act as a "yes" man. Followers need to have critical thinking skills and to assert their opinions and ideas. Followers allow their talents to be utilized for the good of the entire group and willingly contribute where they will be most effective. And many times followers help shape the leader by providing not only required support, but by providing needed insight and knowledge. Think of the relationship between the Chief of Staff and the President ofthe United States. This is leadership and followership at its finest.

Developing Great Follower Skills

If you think about it, there are more followers than leaders. Therefore, there are many more people out there who need the skills required to be a good follower. So what skills should they have?

Self-management: Having the ability to manage yourself (read our companion article The Art of Self-Management: Five Areas in Your Control) means an ability to be productive, organized and efficient.
Communication: Great followers listen and learn as well as express their thoughts, suggestions and ideas.
Collaboration: A follower's success is tied to the team's success, whether it is a team of two or two thousand. To paraphrase a portion of a speech from the show West Wing, "We win together. We lose together. And we are better for having gone through it together."
Loyalty: The best followers are committed to the team, the leader, and the mission and goals of the organization.

Being a follower is an important role. It is because of followers that leaders are made. Unfortunately, the term has developed a negative connation over the years; however, there is nothing negative about being the person who helps a leader to become successful. Being a follower means you need to be actively engaged in the success of the leader. Otherwise, the leader could soon fall from grace.

So the next time you consider a role as a leader or follower, consider the importance of both. And recognize that not everyone can be a leader.

SEVEN PERSONAL QUALITIES FOUND IN A GOOD LEADER.

How often have you heard the comment, “He or she is a born leader?” There are certain characteristics found in some people that seem to naturally put them in a position where they’re looked up to as a leader.

Whether in fact a person is born a leader or develops skills and abilities to become a leader is open for debate. There are some clear characteristics that are found in good leaders. These qualities can be developed or may be naturally part of their personality. Let us explore them further.

1. A good leader has an exemplary character. It is of utmost importance that a leader is trustworthy to lead others. Aleader needs to be trusted and be known to live their life with honestly and integrity. A good leader “walks the talk” and in doing so earns the right to have responsibility for others. True authority is born from respect for the goodcharacter and trustworthiness of the person who leads.

2. A good leader is enthusiastic about their work or cause and also about their role as leader. People will respond more openly to a person of passion and dedication. Leaders need to be able to be a source of inspiration, and be a motivator towards the required action or cause. Although the responsibilities and roles of a leader may be different, the leaderneeds to be seen to be part of the team working towards the goal. This kind of leader will not be afraid to roll up their sleeves and get dirty.

3. A good leader is confident. In order to lead and set direction a leader needs to appear confident as a person and in the leadership role. Such a person inspires confidence in others and draws out the trust and best efforts of the team to complete the task well. A leader who conveys confidence towards the proposed objective inspires the best effort from team members.

4. A leader also needs to function in an orderly and purposeful manner in situations of uncertainty. People look to theleader during times of uncertainty and unfamiliarity and find reassurance and security when the leader portrays confidence and a positive demeanor.

5. Good leaders are tolerant of ambiguity and remain calm, composed and steadfast to the main purpose. Storms, emotions, and crises come and go and a good leader takes these as part of the journey and keeps a cool head.

6. A good leader, as well as keeping the main goal in focus, is able to think analytically. Not only does a good leaderview a situation as a whole, but is able to break it down into sub parts for closer inspection. While keeping the goal in view, a good leader can break it down into manageable steps and make progress towards it.

7. A good leader is committed to excellence. Second best does not lead to success. The good leader not only maintains high standards, but also is proactive in raising the bar in order to achieve excellence in all areas.

These seven personal characteristics are foundational to good leadership. Some characteristics may be more naturally present in the personality of a leader. However, each of these characteristics can also be developed and strengthened. A goodleader whether they naturally possess these qualities or not, will be diligent to consistently develop and strengthen them in their leadership role.

Awards Day 2011

The 1^st Johor Bahru Company held its 54^th Award’s Day on 6^th of March 2011 in Pusat Kebajikan Kalvari. It was a grand activity for every Boys’ Brigade Company. The members of 1^st Johor Bahru Company had put a lot of effort into this Award’s Day.

We had our rehearsal from 1.30 p.m. until 4.00 p.m. in the hall. Meanwhile, those recruits were sitting at the corner to chit chat with each other. A lot of ex-BB members and parents attended the Award’s Day.

The Guard of Honor get ready for the arrival of VIP and at 4pm sharp Mr Michael Moorthy BB Asia & BBM President who is also the Honorary Captain of 1^st JB company arrived. After the General Salute, the VIP inspected the Guard of Honor accompanied by our Captain Mr Jason Chong. Then the VIP received another General Salute and the Guard of Honor march out from the parade ground.

After that, we had a Drilldown Competition lead by Warrant Officer Soon Hock Wei. The prize for the champion member this year is a BB bear from Hong Kong and with a badge. After 15minutes, the competition ends and the champion for this year belong to Cpl Onn Jiun Jye.

Then, our dancing team members gave a short dancing performance. Their dance was really nice because all of them have put a lot of effort and work on every detail. Then, the 1^st JB Band gave a performance that was conduct by Sgt Swee. Some of the parents now understand why their son / daughter always go for band for practice on Saturday and Sunday.

After all of the performances, the most important activity arrived, which is the promotion. This is because all of the members have waited a long time after their hardwork for a year in BB. During this moment of time, all 1^st JB members were very nervous and excited. The first award’s was members discharged to officer. Some Sgt and Cpl who were over 18 years old were discharged from their duties. They will be helper or instructor for individual platoon before they will be promoted to be Warrant Officer.

The next award was the Drilldown Champion. The 2^nd runner up goes to Sgt Kuan Chee Kien, the 1^st runner up goes to Sgt Ng Wei Hao and the champion goes to Cpl Onn Jiun Jye. All 3 of them are from Platoon A. After that, the following award was the Best Pte and also the Best NCO awards. The Best Pte of Platoon A was L/Cpl Khow Sher Zeng and the Best NCO was Cpl Kuan Zi Ning. The Best Pte of Platoon B was L/Cpl Ku Hong Cing and the Best NCO was Cpl Cher Chia Yee. The Best Pte of Platoon C was L/Cpl Yip Fang Ting and the Best NCO was Cpl Edwin Pang Jing Yi.

After that, the 1^st JB Company had a awards for those members who have performed well in their recent PMR examination. In this important moment, the members parents personally helped their children to pin the Scholastic Awards on their uniform.

And finally it is time for promotion. The 1^st JB Company promoted a total of 6 potential Cpl to Sgt, 30 L/Cpl to Cpl and 41 Pte to L/Cpl. It is really good to see so many new leaders being born into our big family.

At last, parents were invited to have the refreshment in canteen. Meanwhile, those members and officers had a photo taking session. The Award’s Day ended successfully.

For those who are promoted, please continue your effort and for those who are no promoted, please work hard and aim for next promotion. Remember Promotion does not means more power but more responsibility.

The 1^st Johor Bahru Company just had a 3days and 2nights expedition camp at Kota Tinggi on 3^rdDecember 2010. We had a lot of fun over there and we also got to know each other more through the camp.

On the first day, each platoon members gathered at RC and SMK TTA awaiting to take officer's car to go to the campsite. Before reaching the campsite, we stopped at Kota Tinggi town to have our breakfast with officers and our Honorary Captain. After taking our breakfast, we depart for Kota Tinggi Waterfall resort. On the way ,we saw our old campsite and the water has become very murky.

When we reached the Kota Tinggi Waterfall Resort, we took some group photo and then we was introduced some ranger who will be leading us on this expedition. Then, we started our expedition journey.

On the way, we saw a lot of palm trees and a big pond in the jungles. Then after walking for about 1.5 km, we saw a river and the water was clean. After crossing the river, we finally felt what the feeling of expedition and it was quite tough.

After 45 minutes of walk, we reached our first campsite. Then, we set up our tent and put our bags into our tent. After that, we went to jungle to explore more. The ranger told us about those small waterfall names. And the name was meaningful. There got about 4 small waterfalls and the name was Japanese Garden, Rock Garden, Spa and Air Terjun Sungai Telepah.

After that, we go back to our campsite and have our lunch. In the afternoon, our game master, Mr. Soon prepared some games for us and the winners does not need to do night duty. In the games, we saw a lot of members were playing cheats because they don’t want to do night duty. But then, every member still enjoyed in the games a lot.

At about 4pm, we start to prepare for our dinner. Actually, the first day dinner should be a cooking test but because of the rain, the cooking test was postponed to second day. So, we were allowed to use bunsen burner to cook our dinner. At about 7pm, we had our dinner and then cleaned our utensils and place to make sure that we can continue to use it for the next day breakfast.

At night, we had our devotion. Mr. Soon shared one story with us and told us what the meaning of the story. Then, L/Cpl Chua Woei Loon gave a sharing with us. And the sharing is about what he learnt in a church camp which he participated before coming for the expedition.

We slept at 9pm on the first day due to everyone is already quite tired after a long day.

On the second day morning, everyone need to wake up at about 7am and start to prepare breakfast for our own group. After having breakfast, we break our tent and continue our journey to the summit of the mountain after some officers which come on second day meet up with us. The rain increases the toughness of the journey. However, all the beautiful waterfall and amazing natural scene had attracted our sight and made us forget our tiredness.

Finally, we reached the summit of mountain at about 1pm after a 4 hours of trekking. Then, we carry on to set up our tent and had our lunch there. Some members went to collect firewood for campfire and also for dinner. After taking our bath, we start to cook our dinner without using the burner as the weather was good and we had enough supply of firewood.

After filing our stomach with delicious food, we start to light up the campfire. We had a very enjoyable sharing section with officers about their funny and unforgettable experience in their past camps. After that, we had our sleep so that we have enough energy to finish tomorrow’s journey.

On the third day morning, we woke up at about 6am. Then, we had to prepare for our breakfast and packs our bag. After that, we need to break down our tent and descend from the summit. It was a tough journey but our officers and seniors keep encourage us to finish this journey.

After about three hours, finally we reached the starting point and we would like to thank God that no accident happened during the whole duration of the camp. Then, we went to waterfall resort to enjoy the cold waterfall water. Besides that, some of the members have a chance to buy the burger as their lunch. Meanwhile, some of the officers were sitting down and eating the delicious ‘ice kacang’.

About 3pm, we had to leave Kota Tinggi. Because some members were hungry, so we stopped at a ‘famous cendol’ stall. The ‘cendol’ was very nice and quite different with the normal one that we had in JB town. After that, we went home. It was really a nice and interesting expedition and we really enjoyed it. Hopefully we will have a second chance to experience this kind of expedition again.

Founder's Day Service

The Boys' Brigade was began in Glasgow on Thursday 4th October 1883 by Sir William A. Smith. It was the first of all the uniformed organizations for boys and girls over the world.

On 9 October 2010, we had carried out the ceremony of Founders’ day at bb hut. After rehearsal, all members get ready for the ceremony. Guard of honour, mini band and recruit participated in the ceremony and we all holded to the end under the sun. After the ceremony, three platoons members had a gathering at there. Besides, we were having some interesting games, own platoon briefing and the final bb month collection. After that, the members played basketball and frisbee at the bb hut. On 4.30pm, we were dismissed and back to own schools.

The ceremony was best and we must appreciate as Sir William had created Boys’ Bridge in 1883 years.

BBM 65th Anniversary Logo Contest

1. This competition is only for current members of BBM and only open to Companies that have paid national dues, submitted R.O.S. returns, and also Company statistics.

2. Current members of BBM include Pre-Juniors, Juniors, Seniors, Primers, Staff-Sergeants, Warrant Officers and all Officers (Lieutenants, Captains, Honorary Captains and Chaplains).

3. All physical (hardcopy) submissions must reach BBM HQ by 24th September 2010. Late submissions by fault of the courier or otherwise, will be rejected. There is no limit on the size of paper for this. A photograph of the submission will not be accepted.

4. All electronic (softcopy) submissions must be sent to brigade.competitions@bbmalaysia.org by 24th September 2010, 12:00p.m. If you wish to submit the softcopy in the form of a CD, then only the due date applies as above. A photograph of the submission will not be accepted.

5. There is no limit for submissions from each member or Company. Each submission must include:

BB Hongkong visit

On 18th of July 09, we had a group of special guests all the way from Hong Kong. The 57th Company of BBHK!

During the combined parade, the 1st JB Band gave a short stationary performance. After which, an ad-hoc drill down competition for all NCOs was conducted under the commands of w/o Lee Soon Seng. In exchange, the members from 57th Coy BBHK also gave a drill performance.

After the parade, everyone proceeds to our 1st JB resource centre for the youth fellowship. All the members from both companies had a good time mingling with one another.

Lastly, before the 57th Coy of BBHK departed, we also hosted a lunch for them at a restaurant nearby. It was such a nice and encouraged experience to see the ministry of the Boys’ Brigade developed across nations.

We had a nice time in Johor Bahru…Boys are very nice and talkative=] And enjoyed their performances…both band & drill, Especially the band performance. It was really nice. A blemish in an otherwise perfect thing is that we really stayed for a short time only…I hope we’ll have another chance to have gathering like that. It was full of happiness in those hours. And thank you for entertaining us so hospitably. =]
